Job Summary

The Accounting Assistant, under the direction of the Finance and Accounting manager, will primarily be responsible to provide general counsel, advice, and guidance on business and financial matters as required. The Accounting Assistant must possess degree or diploma in business, finance, accounting, or a related field and three years of experience in the financial industry. The ideal candidate will have recently graduated in a related program and be eager to come on board and learn how to apply the skills learned.

Job Duties

• Assist in budgets, control expenses, and communicate with departmental leaders to stay abreast of spending, budgeting, reports, and evaluation
• Assist in the development of predictive models to assist with the evaluation of potential business decisions
• Assist in developing and maintaining policy and procedures relating to financial and accounting issues
• Enter, verify, and reconcile transactions such as accounts payable and receivable, purchase orders, cheques, invoices, cheque requisitions, and bank statements
• Prepare general ledger and journal entries and trial balance
• Verify account codes and signatures for proper assignment of budgetary expenditures
• Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that finance activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures
• Perform basic bookkeeping functions in Quickbooks or Microsoft Business Central
• Provide general counsel, advice, and guidance on business and financial matters as required
• Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all activities
• Act as the first line contact with vendors or clients regarding billing problems
• Advise on the content and accuracy of financial reporting
• Ensure that all month-end financial duties and resulting financial reporting is completed in a timely and accurate manner
• Record all business transactions, process accruals and adjustments, reconcile accounts, and assist to prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting and financial statements
• Maintain year-end working papers and spreadsheets, and assist with preparation for any internal or external audits or independent reviews being conducted
• Collect, interpret, and report on financial data
• Process and enter invoices for payment, match invoices with purchase orders, and check for accuracy
• Organize filing of all appropriate documents
• Maintain a professional appearance, demeanour, and attitude at all times

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Meticulous records maintenance skills
• High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
• Demonstrated ability to accurately calculate, post, correct, and manage accounting figures and financial records
• Clean police record check

• Degree or diploma in business, finance, accounting, or a related field
• Ability to analyze and present numerical data in tables, spreadsheets, and forms
• Knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements
• Ability to read, understand, and calculate financial figures such as discounts, interest rates, proportions, percentages, and taxes
• Basic knowledge of accounting systems, budgets, and internal controls
